Seasonal Foraging Activity and Bait Preferences of Ants on Barro Colorado Island, Panama’

چکیده

A yearlong arboreal baiting survey of ants was conducted during 1983 on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Because of a severe El Nifio event, the 1983 dry season in Panama was exceptionally long and dry with a distinct boundary between the dry and wet seasons. Baits, located on tree trunks, attracted both terrestrial and arboreal ants, allowing comparisons between the two groups. Species composition at baits changed dramatically with season. Baits were primarily occupied by arboreal species during the dry season, while wet season baits were occupied mostly by terrestrial species. Arboreal and terrestrial ants differed markedly in their preferences for proteinor carbohydrate-based baits; arboreal ants preferred protein-based baits and terrestrial ants preferred carbohydrate-based baits. Foraging preference for protein suggests that protein resources were limiting for arboreal ants, particularly during the dry season, and that carbohydrate resources were limiting for terrestrial ants. Fundamental differences in arboreal and terrestrial habitats may promote the differences in foraging strategies observed during an annual cycle in a seasonal tropical forest.

A quantification of predation rates, indirect positive effects on plants, and foraging variation of the giant tropical ant, Paraponera clavata

While a clear consensus is emerging that predators can play a major role in shaping terrestrial communities, basic natural history observations and simple quantifications of predation rates in complex terrestrial systems are lacking. The potential indirect effect of a large predatory ant, Paraponera clavata Fabricius (Formicidae: Ponerinae), on herbivores was determined on rainforest trees at L...

Behavioral Biology and Observations of a Statary Eciton Burchelli Army Ant Colony at La Selva Biological Station

Little is known of the ecology and behavioral biology of Eciton burchelli army ants at La Selva biological station, Costa Rica. A statary colony of E. burchelli was followed for seven days in July (wet season). Colony movements were recorded and entered into the La Selva GIS system. Angle of daily raids, velocity of foraging front and distance foraged were recorded. Estimates were made of numbe...

Food Preference and Foraging Activity of Ants: Recommendations for Field Applications of Low-Toxicity Baits

Control of ants using baits of low toxicity cannot be effective without knowledge of bait distribution patterns and bait station densities, which are determined by ants' foraging activities. Furthermore, the success of toxic baits also depends upon attractiveness of bait carriers. Here, we assessed ground and vine foraging activity and food preferences for the three ant species ( Linepithema hu...

Ant/orchid Associations in the Barro Colorado National Monument, Panama

Of 23 orchid species studied at Barra Colorado National Monument in central Panama, 16 were found to produce extrafloral nectar. Extrafloral nectaries were found primarily on reproductive structures and developing shoots. Only one species (Caularthron bilamellatum) showed evidence of ant occupation, indicating that most orchids are not likely to derive nutritional benefit from their association...

Geographic Variation in Host Location Cues for a Dipteran Parasitoid of Paraponera clavata1

Parasitoid insects face considerable trade-offs in locating suitable hosts within complex environments. Apocephalus paraponerae (Diptera: Phoridae) locates its host ant Paraponera clavata (Formicidae: Ponerinae) using olfactory cues. Here, comparing two populations of A. paraponerae, I describe differences in host location cues between two sites, Barro Colorado Island (BCI) in Panama and La Sel...
